A twin study of psychomotor performance during alcohol intoxication: early results.

چکیده
It Is a commonplace observation that some people are greatly affected by even small doses of alcohol while others seem relatively tolerant to even large doses. How much of this variation in susceptibility to intoxication is genetically deter-mined? Are there environmental factors that influence susceptibility to alcohol? In an attempt to answer-these <iueStio~, we aremeaS"uOi'ig f8-3S-year-old twins on a number of psychomotor tasks related to driving skills including motor coordination , body sway, hand steadiness, reaction time, and cognitive impairment before and after ingestion of alcohol. Our sample includes healthy twins of both sexes resident in Sydney and aged between 18 and 35. Each twin participating attends a testing session beginning about 9:00 AM, having eaten a light, nonfatty breakfast about an hour earlier. Four sets of variables are measured during an 8-hour session: personality and drinking history , parameters of the blood ethanol profile, and physiological and behavioural responses following ethanol ingestion. Before testing begins, a 20-00 blood sample " and a urine sample are collected; one aliquot of blood is used for typing to establish zygosity and another aliquot of blood and the urine Sample are used for quantitative haematological and biochemical assays, including mean corpuscular volume and plasma levels of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, aspartate amino-transferase, alkaline phosphatase, and triglycerides, all of which are putative indicators of previous drinking experience [8]. Subjects are trained on apparatUs uSed to test psychomotor "performance and then "prealcohol" (To) measurements are taken of all the physiological and behav-ioural tests. They are then given an alcohol dose of 0.75 g ethanoVkg body weight diluted to 10070 v/v in sugarless lemon squash (equivalent to about 7f.J to a full

Effects of alcohol on psychomotor performance and perceived impairment in heavy binge social drinkers.
Alcohol intoxication often results in negative consequences; however, specific behavioral and subjective effects vary as a function of individual differences. The present study utilized an alcohol challenge paradigm to examine whether heavy binge social drinkers (HD; n=77), compared to light social drinkers (LD; n=55), exhibit: (1) greater tolerance in psychomotor task performance under the inf...
متن کاملGenetic differences in psychomotor performance decrement after alcohol: a multivariate analysis.
We reanalyzed data on the decline in performance on a battery of psychomotor tests, after a standard dose of ethanol (0.75 g/kg body weight), of 206 same-sex twin pairs. Principal components analysis identified two orthogonal factors. The first factor was strongly associated with increased body sway, self-rated intoxication and unwillingness to drive, and reported low average weekly alcohol con...

Self-reports of reactions to small amounts of alcohol, obtained between 1990 and 1992, were compared with reports of alcohol use, obtained in 1990-1992 and also in 1979-1981, in twin subjects of European descent. Data on subjective, physiological, psychomotor, and metabolic responses to a test dose of alcohol, taken in 1979-1981, were also available. Alcohol reactions were more common in women ...
متن کاملEffects of GABRA2 variation on physiological, psychomotor and subjective responses in the alcohol challenge twin study.
Multiple reports have identified variation in the GABRA2 gene as contributing to the genetic susceptibility to alcohol dependence. However, both the mechanism behind this association, and the range of alcohol-related phenotypes affected by variation in this gene, are currently undefined. Other data suggest that the risk of alcohol dependence is increased by relative insensitivity to alcohol's i...
متن کاملAdaptation of performance during a week of simulated night work.
This study aimed to provide a comparative index of the performance impairment associated with the fatigue levels frequently experienced in workplaces that require night work. To do this, we equated fatigue-related impairment with the impairment resulting from varying levels of alcohol intoxication. Fifteen young individuals participated in two counterbalanced conditions which required them to (...
